چکیده

We present evidence that the degree of interchain interactions and morphology in conjugated polymer films can be controlled by altering the chain conformation in the solution from which the film is cast. Light scattering experiments show that the physical size of poly@2-methoxy-5~28-ethyl-hexyloxy!-1,4-phenylene vinylene] ~MEH-PPV! chains can vary by a factor of 2 in different solvents such as chlorobenzene ~CB! or tetrahydrofuran ~THF!. Photoluminescence and wavelength-dependent excitation indicate that MEH-PPV forms aggregate species with an absorption and luminescence spectra that are distinctly red-shifted from the intrachain exciton. The degree of aggregation is both concentration and solvent dependent; for solutions with concentrations typical of those used in spin casting, aggregates comprise a significant fraction of the total number of excited state species. The overall photoluminescence quantum yield is found to depend both on how restricted the polymer conformation is due to the choice of solvent and on aggregation due to polymer concentration. The excited state aggregates have a longer lifetime than their intrachain exciton counterparts, as evidenced by a near-infrared transient absorption in femtosecond pump-probe and anisotropy measurements. Memory of the chain conformation and the extent of aggregation of MEH-PPV in solution is carried into cast films. Thus, many conflicting results presented on the degree of interchain interactions can be explained by noting that the film samples in different studies were cast from precursor solutions with different solvents and concentrations. Overall, a careful choice of the solution ~both solvent and concentration! can be used to produce MEH-PPV films with desired interchain interactions for particular device applications. © 1999 American Institute of Physics. @S0021-9606~99!50408-X#

Unmasking bulk exciton traps and interchain electronic interactions with single conjugated polymer aggregates.

For conjugated polymer materials, there is currently a major gap in understanding between the fundamental properties observed in single molecule measurements and the bulk electronic properties extracted from measurements of highly heterogeneous thin films. New materials and methodologies are needed to follow the evolution from single chain to bulk film properties as multiple chains begin to int...

Ionomeric control of interchain interactions, morphology, and the electronic properties of conjugated polymer solutions and films

It is becoming increasingly clear that the electronic properties of conjugated polymer films are strongly dependent on factors such as the conformation and the degree of aggregation of the polymer strands in the solution from which the film was cast. In this paper, we show how we can take advantage of conjugated ionomers ~conjugated polymers that have been functionalized with side groups that c...

Fractal aggregates of conjugated polymer in solution state.

Semirigid conjugated polymers have received much scientific and technological interest due to their unique electrical and photonic semiconducting properties. Spectroscopic studies have indicated that these polymers underwent interchain aggregation in the solution state even at large dilution; however, the origin of this event and the structure of the resultant aggregates remained the crucial is...

Improving the performance of conjugated polymer-based devices by control of interchain interactions and polymer film morphology

Interchain interactions in conjugated polymer films promote good carrier transport but also reduce the luminescence quantum yield, leading to a fundamental trade-off in optimizing film morphology for device performance. We present two methods to improve the efficiency of light-emitting diodes ~LEDs! based on poly~2-methoxy-5-~28-ethylhexyloxy!-1,4-phenylenevinylene! ~MEH-PPV! by altering film m...

Synthesis and self-assembly of an amphiphilic poly(phenylene ethynylene) ionomer.

We have synthesized a conjugated amphiphilic polyelectrolyte, a poly(phenylene ethynylene) (PPE), and the structurally analogous neutral polymer. The solution-phase aggregation of the uncharged PPE can be reversibly controlled by varying the solvent polarity and concentration, while the charged polymer appears to self-assemble at any concentration in compatible solvents. These conclusions are b...
